- Irish Unity- There Can Be Winner’s
Civic Nationalism is a concept to make Irish Unity work for everyone, but at what cost, and how will this inclusivity and willingness to cater for everyone affect the post partition socio-economic and political outcome?
This weekend, the leaders of civic nationalism; a loose and fragile alliance will descend into the 3 Arena to discuss the future of Ireland and put forward their concept of Civic Nationalism and how a post partition Ireland may look.
We will hear how we must cater for unionism, we must cater for big business and we must cater for “on the fence” voters to persuade them to vote for Unity but at the same time assuring them that “nothing will change”.
First of all, we cannot cater for political Unionism in a post partition Ireland.
While Unionism will be afforded the same democratic rights as every citizen, we cannot go dishing out democratic vetoes and allow them to maintain power above and beyond their democratic mandate in a post partition Ireland in order for them to find any constitutional transition easier.
Unionism will campaign and vote against Irish Unity, they as a political ideology can be losers in the post border poll outcome.
Irish Unity, a 32 County Republic must be based on the solid principle of democracy, a one person one vote for a constitutional government representative of the entire population.
We cannot allow anti-Irish Unity sentiments translate into anti-democratic laws.
The entire purpose of civic nationalism is to ensure a post partition Ireland looks as close as possible to the partitioned Ireland today.
Ireland needs change, we need socio-economic equality, we need core democratic values and condemn vetoes to the history books and if thats means making certain sections of our society unhappy, then so be it.
